About our Sponsor
The Brooke Johns Class Cup is sponsored by Brooke’s youngest son John and his wife Peggy, members of Montgomery Country Club and both avid golfers. They are proud to honor the varied accomplishments of Brooke Johns, who passed away in 1988 at age 93.
Born in 1895 and raised in Georgetown, Brooke spent many years away from D.C. performing in the Zigfield follies. As a famous vaudeville star, Brooke numbered among his show business friends the likes of Buddy Epson, WC Fields and Eddie Cantor. Ginger Rogers radio show, Uncle Brooke’s Farm, was named for him.
Returning to D.C., Brooke married Hazel Barnsley, whom he courted by horse and buggy during visits to her grandfather’s dairy farm. In 1953 Brooke purchased the dairy farm, and eventually started Brooke Manor Country Club on the site, a course that would be familiar to many Washington area golfers for years to come. Brooke sold the property in 1980 to Buster Day of the F.O. Day Company, but soon repurchased it and held it until his death. Golfers familiar with Brooke Manor will recall the grill room, adorned with a collection of Brooke’s unique vaudeville photos.
Originally begun as the F.O. Day Cup in 1980, this tournament was renamed in honor of Brooke Johns by his daughter-in-law, Peggy, a long time WDCGA member.
