About our Sponsor
The original Evening Star Cup dates back to 1924, when the Evening Star newspaper began its sponsorship of WDCGA events, even before Class Cups were established. In 1940, the newspaper began sponsoring a second tournament -- the Evening Star Class B Cup. Together, the Class A and Class B Evening Star Cups are annual reminders of the long and successful association enjoyed by the WDCGA with the city of Washington, D.C.
Rose Marie Vargo, the current sponsor of the Evening Star Class A Cup, is a WDCGA Past President and a native Washingtonian. She has vivid memories of the Evening Star newspaper. When her term as President ended in 1998 she began sponsoring the Class A Evening Star Cup, resurrecting the original beautiful silver trophy donated by the newspaper.
